"Should there be government regulations requiring genetically engineered foods to be labeled?" Task 1

In my opinion there most definitely should be labels on genetically engineered foods. People deserve to know if their food has been genetically engineered and for what purpose (to make it more juicy, bigger, brighter color etc.). Also some of the DNA that is used may cause allergic reactions, for example if someone mixed peanut DNA with apple DNA,  a person who would not normally have an allergic reaction to apples but does have an allergy to peanuts, may have a allergic reaction to the new genetically engineered food. The labels should not only state wither or not the food is genetically engineered and why it was, but also what types of DNA were put into the food to reduce the risk of creating unnecessary allergic reactions. Genetically engineered foods pose other known risks to human health. Some have been engineered to have higher levels of toxins to make them insect-resistant. This increase in toxins reverses thousands of years of selective breeding to decrease toxicity. Another threat is that Viruses spliced into the DNA could easily recombine with pre-existing viruses in the environment to produce new and possibly virulent strains. There is also a wide range of religious problems with genetically engineered foods. Religious vegetarians want to be able to identify and avoid fruits and vegetables with insect, animal or humans genes in them. Jews who keep kosher food laws want to be able to make sure that genetically engineered foods do not violate their restrictions. Without labeling these people have no way of avoiding the genetically engineered foods in question. You cannot identify genetically engineered food just by looking at it. Without labeling citizens are denied what should be their fundamental right. Labeling genetically engineered foods in no way restricts the rights of those people who do decide to purchase and consume them. That is why genetically engineered foods need to be labeled.
